After completing his neurology training at Hospital Puerta de Hierro (1992-1995) in Madrid, Dr Javier Mascias joined the Hospital Carlos III in 1998 as a neurologist. There he combined his work as a general neurologist with the special involvement in ALS patients care. He worked with Dr J. Mora to develop the first ALS unit in Spain. Devoted mainly to outpatient care, he has participated in a large number of ALS multicentric trials (e.g. olesoxime, dexpramipexole, xaliproden, talampanel). In 2014 the Hospital Carlos III merged with Hospital La Paz, forming now a single institution, where Dr Javier Mascias coordinates the ALS unit since November 2021. More than 300 patients are treated regularly at the unit by a high level multidisciplinary team. He is interested in ALS trials, staging and functional scales.
