Dr. Toivonen is a molecular biologist whose main research interests are ALS and prion diseases. He works on disease models of these neurodegenerative disorders to test novel therapeutic approaches and to develop disease biomarkers. His current research interests include microRNAs and other non-coding RNA species in neurodegenerative conditions, as well as the role of intestinal microbial community on regulation of inflammatory processes in ALS. Dr. Toivonen has been earlier contracted as postdoc in two projects of “I+CS Programa Aragonés de Medicina Regenerativa” and one project of the Instituto Salud Carlos III, two of them on ALS, and as a Ramon y Cajal researcher has been IP in three projects and collaborator in two projects related to ALS.
