The Multidisciplinary ALS Unit at Donostia Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), integrating clinical management, diagnostics, and research. Neurologists perform electromyography and genetic testing to ensure accurate diagnosis, while specialists in respiratory care, rehabilitation, psychology, palliative care, and nutrition deliver holistic support. When indicated, botulinum toxin is administered for symptom management. A dedicated nurse coordinator ensures personalized follow-up and continuity of care.
Research is a key component of the unit, with active participation in clinical trials and basic research through the hospital’s affiliated research institute. The unit collaborates closely with the Neurodegeneration–ALS and Muscle–ALS research teams, contributing to advances in disease understanding and treatment. Each year, approximately 15 new ALS patients are assessed, benefiting from a multidisciplinary approach that aims to optimize quality of life while exploring innovative therapeutic strategies.
